Spice island
The Spice Island, Grenada is an independent, three-island nation, the other two islands are Carriacou, the largest of the Grenadines, and Petite Martinique. Grenada has more spices per square mile than any other place in the world: cloves, cinnamon, mace, cocoa, tonka beans, ginger, and a third of the world`s supply of nutmeg. Drop a few seeds anywhere, the locals will tell you, and you have an instant garden. The interior is like a jungle of palms, oleander, bougainvillea, purple and red hibiscus, crimson anthurium, bananas, breadfruit, ferns, and palms.
Grenada is the place that the US invaded in the `80s. Like a fighter on the ropes, it’s come out swinging and has reinvented itself as the next big thing. The one big island and two small ones plonked in the sea in the southeast corner of the Caribbean are undiscovered and rarely visited. For the smallest independent country in the western hemisphere, this place has a lot to offer.
Grenada Island is elliptically shaped and alive with a rainforested interior. Underrated beaches line the coast and sublime scuba diving is on offer just below the surface. St George’s, the largest town, has one of the most picturesque waterfronts in all of the Caribbean. Stone buildings, forts from a forgotten time and houses of all colors meld into a hilly buffet of urban aesthetics. Friendly, welcoming locals go about their lives and are happy to include you in the process. Carriacou is a step back in time. With a cadence a notch or two slower then Grenada Island, this petite isle is a relaxed affair where endearing locals and an eclectic village life is added to sublime scenery. And if that sounds too busy, head over to Petit Martinique where even less happens – and the locals like it that way. -
ATRACTII
This island has friendly people, a lush interior that includes Grant Etang National Park, and the lovely and popular white sands of Grand Anse Beach. Crisscrossed by nature trails and filled with dozens of secluded coves and sandy beaches, Grenada has moved beyond the political turbulence of the 1980s. It`s not necessarily for the serious party person and definitely not for those seeking action at the casino. Instead, it attracts visitors who like snorkeling, sailing, fishing, and doing nothing more invigorating than lolling on a beach under the sun.
Grenada Sailing Festival: Blend ideal sailing grounds, a steady off-shore breeze and colourful sails with the relaxed local atmosphere and you have the yearly Grenada Sailing Festival. There are regattas for both keel boats and work boats.
A colourful Grenadian carnival dancer: in St George`s. Grenada pulses with excitement during the the island`s biggest party, the ebullient Grenada Carnival. Street theatre, music and dancing, pageants of masqueraders and costumed revellers work up to the wild Parade of the Bands through the streets of St George`s. The capital jumps to the sounds of steel bands and DJs as everyone enjoys a Las Lap during the Parade of the Bands. Grenada and Carriacou exult in their own vitality during carnival, making this an unforgettable time to visit the island and to get to know its people.
The 180-hectare, 445 acre Levera National Park has several white-sand beaches for swimming and snorkeling, although the surf is rough here where the Atlantic meets the Caribbean. It`s also a hiker`s paradise, although you should go hiking here only after you`ve hiked Grand Etang National Park and Forest Preserve. In the center of the island, reached along the major interior road between Grenville and St. George`s, is Grand Etang National Park containing the island`s spectacular rainforest is, according to local officials, merely a means of registering the identities of whomever opts to wander around these isolated landscapes.
Levera Park contains a mangrove swamp, a lake, and a bird sanctuary, where you might see a rare tropical parrot. Offshore are coral reefs and sea-grass beds.
Heading down the east coast of Grenada, you reach Grenville, the island`s second city. There`s a fish market along the waterfront, a nutmeg factory here welcomes visitors. From Grenville, you can cut inland into the heart of Grenada. Here you`re in a world of luxuriant foliage, and you pass along nutmeg, banana, and cocoa plantations.
