Paradise of diving
Lying just south of the equator, 160km north of Australia, Papua New Guinea is part of a great arc of mountains stretching from Asia, through Indonesia and into the South Pacific. This fascinating land boasts more than 600 islands and more than 800 indigenous languages (tok ples), and is home to the largest area of intact rainforest outside of the Amazon. Papua New Guinea consists of 4 regions made up of 19 provinces and the National Capital District, each with their own special character and cultures. Visitors will discover a wealth of tropical scenery, from the jungle-clad mountains of the highlands to the sandy white beaches and atolls of the coastal and island provinces.
Vast tracts of the country are wild and undeveloped, with magnificent scenery that ranges from pristine coral atolls to volcanic mountains, dense tropical rainforest and large rivers. The mainland is divided by the Owen Stanley Range, a massive central spike with peaks towering over 4000m.
Great rivers begin their journey to the sea from these mountains, among them the mighty Sepik River, one of the world’s longest waterways. Beneath the mountain chain, fertile coastal plains, flooded delta regions and mangrove swamps exist alongside broad sandy beaches and sheltered bays. The rugged mountain terrain and deep cave systems offer wonderful adventure opportunities for walkers, cavers and climbers, and there is canoeing, kayaking and fishing on the river and delta system. Papua New Guinea also enjoys some of the world’s best diving around its warm coastal waters, with striking coral reefs around the mainland coast and the islands of the Bismarck Sea and the Milne Bay area.
Papua New Guinea is a land of immense diversity. No two provinces are alike in the astounding complexity of this country’s peopleTowering mountain peaks, lush, fertile valleys, golden beaches, sparkling coral islands Papua New Guinea is a country of wild beauty, of breath taking landscapes, of fascinating flora and fauna. It is a place of drama, solitude and sophistication and recognized internationally as one of the premier dive locations in the world. -
ATRACTII
Papua New Guinea’s principal city and capital is Port Moresby, situated halfway along the southern coastline on a superb natural harbor in Central Province. Port Moresby - or "Moresby" as it is popularly known - is a bustling cosmopolitan city of over 200,000 people. Rich in cultural diversity, the city has the country’s largest foreign community and counts among its citizens people from almost every tribal group in the land.
The infamous Kokoda Trail is within striking distance of Port Moresby, and is a main attraction. From popular Ela Beach is the city, the shoreline runs up to Koki Bay, a Market attracts traders and bargain hunters every day, but on the weekends it is crowned with stalls offering fresh fruit, vegetables and seafood. Port Moresby is a fascinating blend of the old and the new. The National Parliament building exemplifies the striking harmony of modern architecture and traditional design. The National Museum and Art Gallery exhibits cultural features of Papua New Guinea’s complex and varied tribal lifestyles.
North Coast of Madang Province consists of reef-fringed lowlands backed by some of the most rugged mountains in Papua New Guinea, and offshore volcanic islands. The town of Madang is situated halfway along the northern coastline in spectacular tropical surroundings. Built on a peninsula, Madang has excellent harbor facilities and is an important shipbuilding and repair center. It’s peninsula setting is a show-place of parks, waterways, luxuriant shade trees and sparkling tropical islands. The area is world famous for its coral reefs and superb visibility - it’s diver’s paradise! Game fishing is a popular sport, with kingfish, tuner, mackerel, barracuda and marlin likely catches,. The South East Coast road leads to the Balek Wildlife Sanctuary, which has strange, fish-filled sulphurous caves, jungle walks, and hot springs. Madang Province is out sanding in its range of natural mountainous, coastal and island features, and is regarded as one of the principal Papua New Guinea’s destinations.
East of the mainland, the Milne Bay Islands are made up of 160 named islands and 500 cays and atolls scattered over 250,000 square kilometers of ocean. The islands are enormously diverse, from the smallest islet barely breaking the surface of the sea to the larger islands such as Fergusson and Goodenough in the D’entrecasteaux Group. All can be reached from the provincial centre of Alotau on the mainland. Alotau is spectacularly sited on the edge of Milne Bay, and is principally used by visitors as a jumping off point for other destinations. Like most other towns in Papua New Guinea, Alotau is worth a visit for its stunning views, bush walks, and local customs. The largest of the three islands is Fergusson, notable for its active thermal region - hot springs, bubbling mud pools, spouting geysers and volcanoes.
Traditional village life and custom highlight a visit to the Trobriand Islands. Located 200 kilometres north of the Papua New Guinean mainland in the Solomon Sea, the Trobriands are low-lying coral islands, in complete contrast to the continental islands further south. The main town of Losuia is situated on Kiriwina, a raised atoll about 40 kilometres long and 10 kilometres wide. It is a place of spectacular scenic beauty, with long coast beaches backed by dense rain forest. Trobriand Islanders resemble Polynesians in both looks and custom, and it is thought their origins may trace back to migration from the South Pacific.
